Lizzie Pepper is truly a remarkable author whose engaging writing style never ceases to amaze me. Her sensationally imaginative plots have left a lasting impression on me, and after thoroughly enjoying the first two volumes, I was excited to see if this new instalment would resonate with me just as powerfully…and it did!
I’m still reeling from this sequel, which is even better than the first book! The author’s masterly imagination will thrill young readers worldwide. Highlights include the destruction humans are causing, as well as a cast of characters who will build eco-warriors of all who read it. I will never look at birds in the same way again, and I’m glad of this. In all, I’m completely blown away by this instalment, and I think the author’s skill really shines through.
My nearly teenage daughter has also become a huge fan of the series, having read and re-read the first two books multiple times. Their prominent place on her bedside table is a testament to the brilliance of Pepper’s writing, and she too has been eagerly anticipating this latest volume.
In The Last Year of the Wild, Volume Three: Summer Solstice, readers are treated to another gripping and meaningful narrative. The prose continues to examine anthropogenic themes, emphasising the significant relationship we maintain with wildlife and nature. It serves as both an inspiration and a catalyst for reflection, encouraging readers to feel a sense of togetherness and increased accountability for our planet.
The ensemble of ‘wild’ characters is, as always, extraordinary, with their distinct aspirations seamlessly woven together to create a captivating tapestry of adventure and significance. Additionally they pay a wonderful homage to British wildlife, illuminating the diverse and lively ecosystems that are frequently overlooked.
In all, this series may be intended for older children, but I am deeply invested in the narrative and its characters, and can’t wait for the next instalment in this phenomenal series!
